Buying a used car safely
Most sellers are genuine. These checks protect you from the few who aren't.
Before you travel
- Check the MOT history on the listing. Mileage should go up steadily between tests.
- Ask for the registration and check it matches the car in the photos.
- Be wary of prices far below similar cars.
When you view the car
- View it at the seller's home address, in daylight, and bring someone with you.
- Check the V5C logbook. The name and address should match the seller and where you are.
- Match the VIN on the V5C to the VIN on the car, usually at the bottom of the windscreen.
- Consider a history check for outstanding finance, write-offs and theft.
Paying
- Never pay a deposit or send money before you have seen the car in person.
- Pay by bank transfer once you are with the car and happy. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
- Show Me The Motor will never ask you to pay through us, hold your money, or arrange delivery.
If something feels wrong, walk away and use the report link on the listing.
